Malaysia's First Sci-Fi 3D movie beats Madagascar, wins Best 3D Animated Feature in LA

Our own award-winning 3D blockbuster comes home

PETALING JAYA: The country's very first 3D animated film will be coming home for its local debut next month after bagging the Best 3D Animated Feature award at the Los Angeles 3D Film Festival last month.

Tripod Entertainment's War of the Worlds: Goliath (WOTWG), which won big at the international festival, had bested popular Hollywood 3D flicks such as Madagascar 3, Paranorman and Tinker Bell: Secret of the Wings.

The film was also featured in a special screening in July at the San Diego Comic Convention and has since been lauded for its futuristic concepts and impressive designs.

Local talents Tony Eusoff and Capital FM deejay Asha Gill joined an international cast with the likes of Peter Whingfield, Marl Sheppard and Adam Baldwin to lend their voices for the film, which took four years to produce.

Loosely adapted as a sequel to H.G. Wells' classic War of the Worlds, the film centres around post-Martian invasion Earth in year 1916, where mankind had rebuilt cities and adopted abandoned Martian technology.

A science-fiction themed animation that is set in the past, the movie has been described as “retro steam-punk”, with its plot focused on mankind's efforts to prevent and defend Earth from a second wave of alien invasion.

Film voice producer Gavin Yap said the movie was distinctively Malaysian, with one of the main characters being a Bugis prince who even speaks a line in Bahasa Melayu.

He said most of the post-production work for the film, including its 3D effects, was done locally.

WOTWG will make its debut in Malaysia on Nov 15 in cinemas nationwide.
